Our task must be to free ourselves…by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.
… – Albert Einstein

“Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.”

—Franz Kafka

A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral.
—Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910)

In fact, if one person is unkind to an animal it is considered to be cruelty, but where a lot of people are unkind to animals, especially in the name of commerce, the cruelty is condoned and, once large sums of money are at stake, will be defended to the last by otherwise intelligent people.
—Ruth Harrison, author of Animal Machines

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Gandhi

“In the great scheme of things what matters is not how long you live, but why you live, what you stand for and what your willing to die for.” ~ Captain Paul Watson, Founder of The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

“One day the absurdity of the almost universal human belief in the slavery of other animals will be palpable. We shall then have discovered our souls and become worthier of sharing this planet with them.”

~ Martin Luther King, Jr

“We are the lucky ones – we are not standing day after day in a tiny space, breathing the stench of our own waste, waiting only to be slaughtered. We must do everything possible for those suffering lives of pain and terror.” ~ Matt Ball co-founder of Vegan Outreach

I’ve always felt that animals are the purest spirits in the world. They don’t fake or hide their feelings, and they are the most loyal creatures on Earth. And somehow we humans think we’re smarter—what a joke. ~ Pink

If I could turn
I’d turn and run
For just one glimpse
of sky and sun

For here there is no
day or night
No breeze, no grass
No morning light

My body lies on
cold, hard stone
Where time stands still
I wait alone

Imprisoned here
I chew the bars
To calm my restless
broken heart

But just when hope
has nearly died
the gates are moved
and opened wide

And just beyond,
I see a light
A glint, a glimmer
Hope takes flight

With racing heart
I rush headlong
Weak and stumbling
Prodded on

And though the air
is thick with fear
The blessed light
is drawing near

Sweet freedom
is surely waiting there
Down that long chute
just past the stairs
